The show is the fourth animated adaptation of the X-Men characters and was produced by Marvel Studios, with production handled by a joint venture between Toonz Animation India and First Serve International called Toonz First Serve.

The overall situations, look of the series, and character designs were inspired by the Astonishing X-Men comic series.

A second season of 26 episodes was confirmed to be in production in November 2008, and Comic-Con 2009 images teased new characters like Bastion, Cable, Colossus, Deadpool, Havok, Jubilee, and Magik joining the cast.

Producer Joshua Fine revealed that a planned second season would have featured Deadpool in a Weapon X episode alongside X-23/Laura Kinney, as well as appearances by Holocaust, Sunfire, and Unus the Untouchable.

Despite plans for a second season, the show was ultimately cancelled in April 2010 due to financial problems with its financing partner.

Unusually, all 26 episodes of the first season aired in Brazil and Latin America on Jetix before the series premiered in any other country, starting August 25, 2008.

In the United Kingdom, some episodes with heavy violence were censored for CBBC broadcast, and episode 17 was not shown at all because it depicted a duel to the death with a scene showing blood.

The Hasbro toyline tied to the series ended after only three waves, notably never producing figures for any of the series' main female characters, including Emma Frost, Jean Grey, Shadowcat, Rogue, and Storm.
