Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Gloria is a spin-off of Archie Bunker's Place, itself a continuation of All in the Family, and follows Gloria Stivic after her husband Michael 'Meathead' left her for one of his students and moved to a commune.

Origins

CBS rejected the original pilot for Gloria, which had been written by veteran All in the Family and Archie Bunker's Place writers Pat Shea, Harriett Weiss, and producer Joe Gannon, a close associate of Carroll O'Connor.

Casting

The rejected original pilot featured a brief cameo by Carroll O'Connor reprising his role as Archie Bunker, dropping off Gloria and Joey at Dr. Adams' clinic; this pilot aired instead as a backdoor episode within Archie Bunker's Place titled 'Gloria: The First Day.'

Origins

After the first pilot was rejected, former WKRP in Cincinnati writers Steve Marshall and Dan Guntzelman took over and wrote a second pilot that went to series; they later found success creating Growing Pains and its spin-off Just the Ten of Us.

Filming

Production of Gloria was moved from CBS Television City to Universal Studios, a change that reportedly upset Carroll O'Connor and effectively shut out the Archie Bunker's Place production staff, including creator Norman Lear, who had no credited involvement in the series.

Trivia

Because of the production move, Carroll O'Connor chose not to be involved in the retooled pilot or the series itself, according to a December 1982 TV Guide interview with Sally Struthers.

Trivia

In the second pilot, Joey adopts a black dog and names it Archie after his grandfather, a choice Carroll O'Connor was reportedly unhappy about.

Reception

Despite ranking 18th in the ratings for its only season, CBS chose not to renew Gloria for a second season.
