Muppets Tonight is a live-action/puppet television series created by Jim Henson Productions and featuring The Muppets. Much like the "MuppeTelevision" segment of The Jim Henson Hour, Muppets Tonight was a continuation of The Muppet Show, set in a television studio, rather than a theater. It ran on ABC from 1996 to 1998 and reruns ran on Disney Channel from 1997 to 2002. As of 2013, it is the last television series to star The Muppets characters.

Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Muppets Tonight served as a continuation of The Muppet Show, being considered its sixth and seventh seasons overall, with a new premise of Kermit and the Muppets running their own television channel and studio.

Filming

Frank Oz's Muppet characters, including Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, and Sam Eagle, appeared only intermittently on the show due to scheduling conflicts with Oz's directing career.

Casting

Performer Kevin Clash revealed at the MuppetFest convention in 2001 that he preferred Clifford wearing sunglasses, and refused to perform the character again unless he had them, since Clifford had visible eyes instead of sunglasses throughout Muppets Tonight.

Origins

Several new Muppets introduced on the show went on to become regulars in later Muppet productions, most notably Pepe the King Prawn, who started out as the elevator operator and commissary cook.

Casting

One episode featured a cameo appearance from Leonard Nimoy.

Trivia

Of the 22 total episodes produced, ABC ordered 13 but only aired ten during the 1995–96 season before the Disney Channel purchased the show and aired the remaining episodes plus eight new ones in 1997–98.

Trivia

One of the nine newly produced episodes for the Disney Channel run was actually a clip show compiling material from earlier episodes.

Reception

In Ireland, the series was broadcast on TG4 and was eventually dubbed into Irish Gaelic.

Reception

In 2005, Brian Henson expressed interest in releasing the show on DVD, but as of 2026 Muppets Tonight has never been released on home media or made available on any streaming or digital platform.
