The series was originally conceived as a reboot focused mainly on Bugs Bunny, following the end of The Looney Tunes Show in 2013, and was announced in March 2014 under the title Wabbit or Bugs! depending on the region.

The animation was produced by Yearim and Rough Draft Studios from South Korea (with Rough Draft only working on the first season) and Snipple Animation from the Philippines.

The production team deliberately avoided classic Looney Tunes clichés like the anvil gag, instead devising what producer Erik Kuska called 'modern heavy objects to cause pain', though some classic items like boulders and safes still occasionally appeared.

Daffy Duck's personality was reverted to his original screwball character traits from his earliest shorts as part of the reboot's approach.

After the first season, producer Erik Kuska noted that Elmer Fudd might not be 'the man' anymore as Bugs' main rival, since the show introduced many new villains for Bugs to face instead.

Starting with season 2, the show was retooled and renamed New Looney Tunes, introducing a new intro using music based on the classic Looney Tunes theme song 'The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down'.

The character Jack was dropped from the show after only two appearances because his personality traits, including his scream, were deemed too similar to Yosemite Sam.

Season 3 featured musician Axl Rose as a guest star in the episode 'Armageddon Outta Here', marking his first studio recording since 2008.

The character Squint Eatswood, a bigoted beaver, has a name that is a play on actor Clint Eastwood, while the polar bear character Krakos has a name referencing the Greek mythical figure Kratos.
