The series is based on Sophia Amoruso's 2014 autobiography #Girlboss, which recounts how she founded the company Nasty Gal while working as a campus safety host for San Francisco's Academy of Art University.

Netflix announced in February 2016 that it had ordered a series adaptation of Amoruso's autobiography, with the first season receiving an order of 13 episodes.

Britt Robertson joined the cast as lead character Sophia Marlowe in June 2016, alongside Johnny Simmons, Alphonso McAuley and Ellie Reed who all joined that same month.

Dean Norris joined the cast in a recurring role as Sophia's father in July 2016.

Principal photography for the series took place in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The show was cancelled by Netflix after just one season.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the first season a 32% rating based on 25 reviews, while Metacritic scored it 53 out of 100, indicating mixed or average reviews.

Critics were divided on whether the show delivered a genuine feminist message; Jennifer Wright of the New York Post called it a 'feminist fraud' due to the main character's selfishness, while other critics praised Britt Robertson's performance despite finding the character unlikeable.
