Chelsea was part of Chelsea Handler's July 2015 deal with Netflix, which also included the stand-up special Uganda Be Kidding Me Live and the docu-comedy series Chelsea Does.

The show debuted on May 11, 2016 as Netflix's first-ever talk show, originally planned to release 90 episodes a year at 30 minutes each.

Handler jokingly explained that choosing the show's title took a team at Netflix, a hired digital department, and 'some small children who work in various countries' about two to three long hours before landing on the simple name 'Chelsea'.

Episodes were not aired live but were taped in front of a live audience and then streamed to 190 countries roughly 12 hours after taping, since a live broadcast was impossible given the global rollout.

For the first season, new episodes were released three times a week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) after being taped on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, though the schedule shifted to just once a week for the second season.

Unlike Handler's earlier work, her longtime comedic partner Chuy was not part of the Chelsea series.

The show's theme song was composed by electropop artist Memoryy.

The first season received mixed reviews, holding a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 50/100 on Metacritic, with critics like The Decider saying it was 'riddled with execution problems.'

Netflix cancelled the show after two seasons in October 2017; while Handler publicly took credit for ending it herself to focus on a new political documentary, sources speculated the poor critical reception played a role in the decision.
