The series is based on the novel of the same name by G.B. Joyce and was created by Tim Kilby and Shelley Eriksen.

During production, the show was first known under the working title 'The Code'.

William Shatner guest-starred as Norm Glinski, a rival private investigator and old nemesis of Angie, during seasons 2 and 3.

As of January 2021, Private Eyes was distributed internationally to 180 territories along with online streaming.

In March 2025, a spin-off titled Private Eyes West Coast was announced, with Jason Priestley and Cindy Sampson reprising their roles as Shade and Everett relocating to Victoria, British Columbia; The CW later picked up the series for release in the United States.
