The series was inspired by a GameTap project called 'A Day in the Extra Life' and was created to re-imagine well-known video game franchises through different stories of their characters, with Lara Croft chosen as the first subject.

Minnie Driver voices Lara Croft in every episode of the series.

Comic book writers Warren Ellis, Brian Pulido, Peter Chung, Jim Lee and Gail Simone were each recruited to write episodes for the season.

Jim Lee, a fan of the Tomb Raider games, co-wrote the final episode 'A Complicated Woman'.

Gail Simone was drawn to Lara Croft as a strong female character comparable to Wonder Woman, which led her to write a prequel-style origin story reflected in the episode 'Pre-Teen Raider'.

Peter Chung, who was not familiar with the video games beforehand, researched the character and realized Croft was trying to reclaim a relic before a villain could get it first, then deliberately reversed these roles for the first three episodes he worked on.

Warren Ellis compared Lara Croft to the adventurer character Allan Quatermain.

Brian Pulido, who wrote 'The Revenge of the Aztec Mummy' and 'Lara Croft: Legacy', described Croft as 'a hot chick with guns' and drew inspiration from Tex Avery cartoons while writing.

Although the writers had great creative freedom, the production team was given basic character guidelines by the game's developers to ensure Lara would not act out of character.

In December 2021, Gail Simone revealed on Twitter that there had been discussions with Warner Bros. about developing a spin-off series based on her episode, but as of 2025 nothing had come of it.
