Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Gypsy was created by Lisa Rubin, who also served as showrunner and executive producer for the Netflix series.

Casting

Naomi Watts stars as Jean Holloway, a psychologist who secretly infiltrates the private lives of her patients under the alias Diane Hart, with Billy Crudup co-starring as her husband Michael.

Filming

Sam Taylor-Johnson was announced in February 2016 as the director of the first two episodes, also serving as an executive producer on the series.

Music

Stevie Nicks re-recorded an acoustic version of her Fleetwood Mac song 'Gypsy' specifically to serve as the show's theme song.

Reception

The series was cancelled after just one season, only about a month and a half after its release, on August 11, 2017.

Reception

Gypsy received generally negative reviews, holding a 40% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 45/100 on Metacritic, with critics like The New York Times' James Poniewozik calling it dull despite praising its production value and acting.

Reception

The show faced criticism from Roma organizations for using the term 'gypsy' in its title, which many Romani people consider an ethnic slur due to its historical association with antiziganist violence, including laws that authorized the enslavement and persecution of Romanichal people in Tudor-era England.
