The series was created by Bruce Helford as a starring vehicle specifically to capitalize on Nikki Cox's popularity following her previous WB sitcom Unhappily Ever After, which had run for five seasons.

In July 1999, The WB placed the series straight-to-order from Drew Carey Show co-creator Bruce Helford, but it wasn't formally ordered to series until May 2000.

Each episode of season one opened with a musical dance number featuring elaborate costumes, including Godzilla, cockroaches dancing to 'We Are Family', brides who stripped to reveal red devil costumes, and even the severed head of Marie Antoinette.

Similar to Murphy Brown, nearly every episode in season one (and some in season two) featured a different song as its theme, accompanied by a dance routine performed by Nikki.

In season two, the show abandoned its varying musical intros in favor of a standardized opening set to a remixed version of Tom Jones's 'She's a Lady'.

Despite The WB ordering a full 22-episode second season at its May 2001 upfronts, the network abruptly pulled the show and halted production after only 19 episodes in January 2002 due to very low ratings, leaving six episodes unaired in the United States.

The guest cast included several professional wrestlers and wrestling personalities, such as Kevin Nash, Randy Savage, and The Fabulous Moolah (playing herself), reflecting the show's wrestling-adjacent storyline involving Dwight's career.

Comedian Drew Carey, with whom creator Bruce Helford had worked on The Drew Carey Show, made a guest appearance as business magnate Barry Tenzer in the episode 'Superhero Blues'.
