Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo

The project was originally planned as a short two-episode sequel to fill the release gap before the OVA Mazinkaiser, but when Mazinkaiser's production was further delayed, the plans were drastically expanded into a full original story bridging the manga continuity from Getter Robo to Getter Robo Go.

Because the licensing rights for Getter Robo Go could not be used, the production team newly designed Neo Getter Robo, based on Getter Robo Go's design but incorporating elements of Getter Robo G.

The character of Jack King, who speaks Japanese with a strange English accent, was actually reverse-imported from his portrayal in the Super Robot Wars crossover game series rather than from the original Getter Robo Go anime, where he spoke normally.

Ryoma Nagare and Hayato Jin are voiced by the same actors as in the previous OVA Shin Getter Robo: Sekai Saigo no Hi, while Professor Saotome is voiced by Kosei Tomita, the same actor as in the original TV anime.

Kenji Utsumi, who voices Emperor Gol in this OVA, had different casting than in the TV anime version, though in the Super Robot Wars series Utsumi does voice the TV anime version of Emperor Gol.

Joji Yanami, who voices Professor Shikishima, previously voiced both Kuruma Benkei and Emperor Vlei in Getter Robo G; Benkei makes a one-cut cameo appearance in the final episode's ending.

Locations such as Yokohama and Marunouchi were meticulously depicted through on-site location scouting (location hunting) for the backgrounds.

Director Jun Kawagoe revealed that while scouting the National Diet Building for filming reference, the crew was questioned by police, which led them to decide to also destroy the Metropolitan Police Department building in the story as a result.

In Ken Ishikawa's rough character designs, Mary King was originally drawn as a large, heavyset woman bigger than her brother Jack, but this design was ultimately not used in the final production.

The Gatling Gun equipped on Neo Getter-1 in the video game Super Robot Wars R shares the same design as an early developmental weapon shown being held by Professor Shikishima at the beginning of episode 2, though it was never actually equipped on Neo Getter Robo in the OVA itself.
