My Mother and Other Strangers

The series was filmed with two stages in County Down: a secondary set in Ballycranbeg, Rubane, Ballycran, and the main stage located in Kearney.

Writer Barry Devlin grew up in the small village of Ardboe on the shores of Lough Neagh and drew on this familiar setting to craft what he described as wanting to create an 'exotic love story' in a place he recognised.

The fictional village of Moybeg, where the series is set, is placed on the shores of Lough Neagh, echoing the real-life landscape of the writer's childhood home.

The first series, consisting of five 60-minute episodes, was commissioned by BBC One in May 2015 and was produced by BBC Northern Ireland with funding from Northern Ireland Screen.

The show made its way to American audiences starting in June 2017, airing on PBS as part of the network's Masterpiece series.

The story explores the arrival of thousands of American servicemen from the USAAF Eighth Air Force into a small rural Northern Irish community during World War II, a real historical phenomenon that inspired the series' central drama.
