Hwang Shi Mok underwent brain surgery as a child to curb his violent temper, which left him devoid of emotions. Hwang becomes a prosecutor known for his piercing intelligence and logic, but he is ostracized because he lacks empathy and social skills. He is also one of only a handful of upright prosecutors who have refused to take bribes. One day, he encounters a stabbing victim while investigating corruption. He meets Lieutenant Han Yeo Jin at the crime scene. They join forces to root out corruption at the prosecutors’ office and solve a serial murder case.

The series was created and written by Lee Soo-yeon and aired initially on TVN from June 10 to July 30, 2017, before a special episode entitled "The Beginning" aired as a preview on June 3, 2017.

References

The original Korean title, 비밀의 숲, literally means "secret forest," a title different from the one used internationally, "Secret Forest," and from the French title "Stranger."

The series was renewed for a second season of 16 episodes, aired from August 15 to October 4, 2020, still on TVN.

In France, the series was entirely made available on Netflix from August 1, 2017, shortly after the end of its broadcast in South Korea.

Casting

The role of prosecutor Hwang Si-mok, unable to feel emotions after brain surgery, is played as an adult by Cho Seung-woo, while the young character is played by two different actors, Gil Jeong-woo at age ten and Song Eui-joon at age fifteen.
