White Gold was created by Damon Beesley, co-creator of The Inbetweeners, and produced through Fudge Park Productions, a company he established in 2015 with fellow Inbetweeners creator Iain Morris.

The series reunited two former Inbetweeners cast members, Joe Thomas and James Buckley, who play junior salesmen alongside Ed Westwick's lead character Vincent Swan.

Beesley acted as showrunner and executive producer on White Gold and personally wrote eight of the show's twelve episodes, while Joe Thomas and Chris Niel each wrote two episodes.

Production of series 2 was suspended in November 2017 following allegations of sexual assault made against star Ed Westwick, and filming only resumed in November 2018 after he was not charged with any crime.

A fake BBC-branded Facebook post claiming the show had been cancelled circulated online; James Buckley responded on Twitter saying he was unaware of any cancellation, and the BBC later confirmed the post was fake.

The first series holds an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics praising its 1980s setting, dark humour and performances, while the second series scored 90% based on fewer reviews.

Critics highlighted the show's embrace of Thatcherite-era 1980s culture, with reviews noting its use of period music and fashion to evoke nostalgia and its foul-mouthed, laddish comedic tone.
