Series creator James Roland announced the show's cancellation by Syfy on the very same day that the season finale aired.

Each episode of the series was designed to be based on a different genre of 1970s/1980s exploitation films, such as cannibal films, nymphomaniac films, or insane asylum films.

Although set in the United States, the series was actually filmed in Cape Town, South Africa.

The show received a straight 13-episode direct-to-series order from Syfy on July 28, 2015, without a traditional pilot process.

Critic Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times described the series as a sweatier, grimier, and better-acted version of Death Race 2000, highlighting its grindhouse gore and raunch style.
