Three Girls

Three Girls is a dramatised account of the Rochdale child sex abuse ring, depicting how police and local authorities failed to investigate abuse allegations because victims were seen as unreliable witnesses and out of fear of being accused of racism given the perpetrators' ethnicity.

The real-life figures depicted in the series, sexual health worker Sara Rowbotham, lead investigator DC Margaret Oliver, and public prosecutor Nazir Afzal, all served as consultants on the production.

Although the story is set in Rochdale, the three-part drama was actually filmed in Bristol between June and August 2016.

Bristol locations were used to double for the real settings: the council offices on Temple Street stood in for Liverpool Crown Court, while Bristol Register Office was used for the interior community meeting scenes.

Additional filming took place in Victoria Park, Eastville Park, and streets in Hartcliffe, Knowle, Easton, Bedminster and Redcliffe, all in Bristol.

The series drew strong viewership on BBC One, with 8.24 million viewers for episode one, 7.88 million for episode two, and 8.19 million for episode three.

A BBC documentary titled The Betrayed Girls, covering the real case, was broadcast on 3 July 2017 as a follow-up to the drama.

During the trial of Darren Osborne, the perpetrator of the 2017 Finsbury Park terrorist attack against Muslim pedestrians, it was noted that he developed an obsession with Muslims after watching Three Girls.
