The miniseries was commissioned by BBC Drama in May 2017 along with 10 other television dramas.

It was adapted by Heidi Thomas, best known for creating Call the Midwife, and directed by Vanessa Caswill.

The production was a co-production between Playground Television UK and PBS Masterpiece, which broadcast it as part of its Masterpiece anthology.

Although the story is set in Concord, Massachusetts, the series was actually filmed in County Wicklow, Ireland, including the coastal town of Bray and Ardmore Studios, with filming starting in July 2017.

The costumes for the miniseries were created by Irish costume designer Eimer Ní Mhaoldomhnaigh.

The cast included notable veteran actors Emily Watson, Michael Gambon and Angela Lansbury.

The series premiered on BBC One on Boxing Day 2017, airing over three consecutive days as a three-part miniseries.

The show received an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 38 reviews, though critic Mike Hale of The New York Times gave a more negative review, saying it lacked the warmth of the original book.
