During the development stage of the series, the pre-production process was planned with the aim of filming at overseas locations such as the Czech Republic and reaching an agreement on the monopoly of foreign copyright rights.

The first script reading took place in June 2017 at the KBS Annex building in the Yeouido district in Seoul.

Filming began in late June 2017 and was completed on November 29, 2017, with some of the filming taking place in the Czech Republic.

The entire production of the series took two years to complete and the total cost was approximately 10 billion won (9.23 million US dollars).

The female lead role was initially offered to Go A-ra, but the actress rejected the offer.

The series was screened at the Cannes International Series Festival before being broadcast in South Korea.

Scenes depicting violence by a male character against a female character at the beginning of the series sparked controversy; following a similar scene in tvN's 'Nae Ajusshi' the same year, such scenes were criticized for being disturbing.

During the broadcast of the series, some episodes were postponed or broadcast times were changed due to live coverage of the 2018 North America-North Korea Summit and 2018 FIFA World Cup matches.
