Origins

The series is inspired by the real-life 1978 kidnapping of South Korean filmmaker Shin Sang-ok, who was abducted on the orders of Kim Jong-il (then in charge of North Korea's cultural affairs) and forced to make propaganda films.

Filming

Although the story is set in a fictional Asian dictatorship resembling North Korea, the Asian scenes were actually filmed in Thailand.

References

The series contains numerous references to the films and quotes of François Truffaut, including an excerpt from his film The 400 Blows.

The title 'Kim Kong' is a tribute to the kaiju monster King Kong.

Reception

French newspaper Le Monde gave a very negative review, calling the series 'navrante' (pitiful) and accusing it of treating its viewers like fools, in contrast to more positive reviews from Europe 1 and 20 minutes.

When it first aired in France on Arte on September 14, 2017, the series drew an audience of 568,000 viewers, representing 2.5% of the audience share.
