The American series is an adaptation of an Australian television series of the same name created by Trent O'Donnell, who co-developed the US version with Patrick Brammall.

The show was executive produced by a notable comedy team including Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, Joe Farrell, Jason Burrows, and Joe Hardesty, with production companies CBS Television Studios, Gary Sanchez Productions, and Funny Or Die involved.

For its fourth season, announced in October 2020, the series switched from a live-action format to computer animation, a change made during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Series co-creator Patrick Brammall, who wrote and produced the show, also stars in it as police detective Nick Cullen.

The show features numerous guest cameos from well-known comedians and actors, including Jessica Alba, Amy Schumer, Bridget Everett, Jake Johnson, and J. K. Simmons, with cameo frequency increasing in later seasons.

The first season received a mixed critical reception, holding a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 56 out of 100, both indicating average reviews.

The Guardian critic Luke Buckmaster gave the first season 3 out of 5 stars, praising its gentle mirth and appreciation of incongruity despite a niche comedic hook.

The series was removed from Paramount+ in January 2023, and Canadian channel Showcase picked up and broadcast the first season in autumn 2020.
