The series is one of Swedish public broadcaster SVT's biggest drama productions ever, spanning several decades starting from the end of World War II in 1945.

The show was created and written by Ulf Kvensler, Malin Nevander and Johan Rosenlind, based on an original idea by Johan Rosenlind, with Kvensler serving as head writer.

Filming began in May 2016 and took place mostly in Gothenburg, with the first two seasons shot simultaneously.

Some scenes were filmed at Nääs Castle in Lerum Municipality and at Gåsevadholm Castle in Kungsbacka Municipality, standing in for 1940s-70s Stockholm settings.

Despite the story being set in Stockholm, the production was largely filmed in Gothenburg and Kungsbacka.

The series won the 2018 Kristallen award for Best TV Drama of the Year, and lead actress Hedda Stiernstedt won Best Female Actress in a TV Production for her role.

While the first three seasons unfold chronologically from 1945 into the 1970s, the fourth season is set in 1951, filling in narrative gaps between seasons 1 and 2, and was released as a Christmas special on 25 December 2020.

The English title of the series is 'The Restaurant', translating the Swedish title 'Vår tid är nu' which literally means 'Our Time Is Now'.
