Mosaic

Mosaic was created by Steven Soderbergh, producer Casey Silver, and writer Ed Solomon, and was designed to be released in two forms: an interactive iOS/Android app and a traditional 2018 HBO television drama.

Writer Ed Solomon built the show's structural themes into the narrative itself, aiming to make every character worthy of their own story, noting that 'every villain is the hero of their own story.'

In the app version, the plot cannot be altered by the user, but viewers can choose which character's perspective to follow at branching points, and can explore background documents, emails, news clippings, voice mails, and police reports through a 'Discoveries' feature.

The footage for Mosaic was largely filmed in Park City, Utah.

Because of the project's naturalistic style, Soderbergh used relatively little post-processing or special effects and avoided shooting many takes, aiming for a less rehearsed, more natural feel.

If all of the app's branching content is combined, Mosaic amounts to approximately seven and a half hours of material, blurring the line between a television show and a video game.

The Mosaic app launched on iOS on November 8, 2017, followed by an Android version on November 21, 2017, and a web browser version in January 2018 just before the TV broadcast; both the app and website were later decommissioned in January 2019.

Sharon Stone received widespread critical acclaim for her performance as Olivia Lake, with Rolling Stone calling it her best role in ages, and she won Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Television Film at the 23rd Satellite Awards.

As of 2017, Soderbergh had two more unnamed interactive storytelling projects under development using the same platform built for Mosaic, but no further information on their status had emerged as of 2024.
