The series is set in the real-life town of Boring, Oregon in 1996, using the town's actual name for its fictional Boring High School setting.

Filming took place in summer 2017 across several Oregon locations, including Boring, Oregon City, Portland, and Fort Rock State Natural Area near Bend.

The crew filmed scenes inside a real Blockbuster Video store in Sandy, Oregon, which closed down after production wrapped.

The A/V club scenes were shot at Willamette Falls Studios, a non-profit public access center located in Oregon City.
