The first season was filmed on location in Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, London and Luxembourg.

The series was produced by Letterbox Filmproduktion and Iris Productions in co-production with ZDF and arte, together with Federation Entertainment.

The first two episodes premiered at the 2018 Berlinale in the Zoo Palast cinema on 21 February 2018.

A day after its Berlinale premiere, all six episodes were already available via the arte and ZDF online media libraries, and within the first week the series was streamed around 1.3 million times.

The series was picked up internationally, being acquired by Hulu in the US, broadcast on AVROTROS in the Netherlands, made available on Netflix in Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland and France, and distributed via Channel 4/Walter Presents in the UK, TVP in Poland, and CBC Gem in Canada.

Production of the second season cost almost ten million euros, about two million more than the first season, and filming wrapped by the end of April 2019.

The show won multiple awards, including the 2018 Deutscher Schauspielpreis for lead actress Paula Beer and lead actor Barry Atsma, a 2018 Bambi award for Paula Beer, the 2019 Deutscher Fernsehpreis for Best Drama Series and Best Direction (Christian Schwochow), and the 2019 Grimme-Preis in the Series category.
