Warner Bros. purchased the film rights to A Discovery of Witches in 2011, with playwright David Auburn initially signed to write the screenplay for a planned film adaptation before the project became a TV series instead.

The first series took six months to film and wrapped on 16 February 2018, with much of the production taking place on location in Wales and at Bad Wolf Studios in Cardiff.

Filming for the second series took place partly in the UK and partly in Italy, with production completed in the UK by December 2019 before moving on to Italian locations.

The third series was filmed at Wolf Studios in Cardiff, as reported during New York Comic Con's virtual event in October 2020.

Sky One renewed A Discovery of Witches for both a second and third series on 2 November 2018, before the first series finale had even aired.

The show made its American television debut on 7 April 2019 on AMC and BBC America, airing alongside the second season of Killing Eve.

The first series received highly positive reviews, with 94% of 33 Rotten Tomatoes critics giving it a positive rating and an average score of 7/10, praising the chemistry between leads Matthew Goode and Teresa Palmer.

The series received a nomination for Best New Drama at the National Television Awards, having appeared on the longlist in October 2018 and the shortlist in January 2019 for the 24th National Television Awards.
