Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The American Camping series is an adaptation of a British television series of the same name created by Julia Davis, which had itself been nominated for two BAFTAs for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Comedy Writer.

Origins

Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner had been developing the series with HBO for some time before it was officially green-lit, and the project only moved forward once Jennifer Garner committed to star in it.

Casting

Julia Davis, creator of the original British series, stayed involved in the American remake as one of its executive producers alongside Dunham and Konner.

Casting

Jennifer Garner was announced as the lead alongside the initial series order, followed shortly after by David Tennant joining as the male lead, with Janicza Bravo, Arturo Del Puerto, Brett Gelman, Juliette Lewis and Ione Skye rounding out the main cast within the same month.

Casting

Busy Philipps and Nicole Richie joined the cast in undisclosed guest capacities, later revealed to be one-episode roles in the episode 'Up All Night'.

Filming

Principal photography for the series was expected to begin in spring 2018 in Los Angeles.

Reception

The series received a mostly negative critical response, holding just a 27% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 51 reviews and a 50/100 'mixed or average' score on Metacritic.

Reception

Due to its largely negative reviews, Camping was cancelled by HBO after a single season.
