The Outpost was produced by Syfy's international channels for international broadcast before being acquired by The CW for airing in the United States.

The first season was filmed in Utah between January and May 2018, after Syfy International greenlit a 10-episode season in January 2018 and The CW picked it up for broadcast in March 2018.

Starting with the second season, production moved from Utah to Serbia, beginning filming in January 2019.

Production of the third season was shut down during the filming of the sixth and seventh episodes in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and filming resumed in Serbia on June 12, 2020.

Rotten Tomatoes gives the series a 50% score based on 10 reviews, with critics noting that the show's 'potential pleasures can't quite overcome its cheap-looking production design.'

On Metacritic, the series holds a score of 39 out of 100 based on 5 critics, indicating 'generally unfavorable reviews.'

Critic Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter said the pilot looked 'cheap' for a broadcast network series, noting that much of it involved characters talking around things the budget couldn't show.

Several critics unfavorably compared The Outpost to other fantasy series such as Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, and Xena: Warrior Princess.
