The series is based on the biography 'Fosse' by Sam Wasson, whose rights were sold to FX by executive producer George Stelzner.

In summer 2016, Stelzner pursued Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Thomas Kail to join the project, both of whom were already familiar with the Wasson biography since Miranda and Wasson had been classmates at Wesleyan University years earlier.

Tony Award-winning writer Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen) joined the production team, and he and Kail worked to secure the participation of Nicole Fosse, the only child of Bob and Gwen and executor of the Fosse/Verdon estate, during early development.

Margaret Qualley, who plays Ann Reinking, consulted heavily with the real Reinking, holding chats with her twice a week for the duration of the shoot.

Ann Reinking was not an official consultant on the series but praised Sam Rockwell and Michelle Williams' performances, while expressing conflicted feelings about the portrayal of Fosse as an abusive partner.

Principal photography took place at Silvercup Studios in New York City, running from late October 2018 to late March 2019.

Fosse/Verdon released weekly soundtrack albums alongside each new episode, featuring the cast performing famous songs from Fosse and Verdon's careers, including 'Big Spender' from Sweet Charity and 'Corner of the Sky' from Pippin.

At the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, the series earned 17 nominations including Outstanding Limited Series, with Michelle Williams winning Outstanding Lead Actress; she also won Best Actress at the Golden Globes and SAG Awards, where Sam Rockwell won Best Actor.
