This BBC series is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's 1862 novel, written by Andrew Davies and directed by Tom Shankland, starring Dominic West, David Oyelowo, and Lily Collins.

The Weinstein Company was originally set to co-produce the series and distribute it in the U.S. and China, but was dropped from the project following the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse allegations.

After The Weinstein Company's departure, PBS member station WGBH Boston, through its Masterpiece series, stepped in as a co-producer.

Filming for the six-episode series began in February 2018 and took place in Belgium and Northern France.

The series holds an 88% approval rating from 40 critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an average score of 7.5/10, and a score of 79/100 on Metacritic based on 11 critics.

Lily Collins' portrayal of Fantine was widely praised by critics, with The Independent's Alexandra Pollard calling her performance 'magnificent' and noting she played the character 'with steeliness and grace'.

Dominic West's performance as Valjean in the final episode drew particular critical acclaim, with The Telegraph's Gabriel Tate writing that 'Dominic West steals the show in a stirring finale.'
