Mental was executive-produced by Deborah Joy LeVine, creator of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, along with her brother and writing/producing partner Dan LeVine.

Although the series is set in Los Angeles, it was actually filmed in Bogotá, Colombia, at the Fox Telecolombia production facilities, with production beginning on June 2, 2008.

Despite being filmed in Colombia, no Colombian actor was cast as a regular character and very few were cast even for occasional roles, due to the strict American nature of the series.

Metacritic gave the show's first season a score of 40% based on reviews from 18 critics.

The series premiere on FOX averaged a 3.6/6 rating and just under 5.8 million viewers, improving on its lead-in, but declining ratings afterward led Fox to cancel the show after just one season.

The complete first season was released on DVD on December 1, 2009, as a 4-disc set containing all 13 episodes plus an unrated alternate pilot.
