Emma Roberts was originally cast as lead Kat Baker when Netflix ordered the series, but she dropped out in October 2018 due to a scheduling conflict and was replaced by Kaya Scodelario.

Former competitive figure skater Johnny Weir was cast in a recurring role as Gabriel Richardson, the pairs partner of the character Leah.

A team of real Canadian figure skaters served as skating doubles for the cast, including Michelle Long and Elizabeth Putnam for Kaya Scodelario's single skating scenes and Dylan Moscovitch for Evan Roderick's character.

Real-life Canadian pairs skaters Evelyn Walsh and Trennt Michaud performed as the doubles for the pair skating elements between the lead characters Kat and Justin.

Principal photography for the series took place over about four months, from January 28 to May 16, 2019, in Toronto, Ontario.

The series was canceled by Netflix after just one season, with the decision announced on February 3, 2020, only about a month after its premiere.

Critics compared the show's tone to a mix of other productions, with The Hollywood Reporter describing it as combining 'the unflinching class struggles of I, Tonya, the star-crossed romance of The Cutting Edge and the disability-as-tragedy goopiness of Ice Castles.'
