The series was announced back in November 2018, well before its 2021-2022 airing.

Black Lotus was co-produced by Adult Swim and Crunchyroll in partnership with Alcon Television Group, and is set in Los Angeles in 2032, bridging the timeline between Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 and 2036: Nexus Dawn.

The anime was animated by Sola Digital Arts with Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama serving as co-directors.

Shinichirō Watanabe, who directed the earlier short Blade Runner Black Out 2022, returned as a creative producer on Black Lotus.

Singer Alessia Cara both voices the replicant nightclub singer Selene and performs the opening theme song 'Feel You Now'.

The series featured a dual voice cast, with separate Japanese and English actors for each character, such as Jessica Henwick and Arisa Shida both voicing the lead replicant Elle.

On September 28, 2022, Warner Bros. Discovery executive Jason DeMarco confirmed the series had been written off by the company after it was removed from Adult Swim's website.

A four-issue comic sequel titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus - Leaving L.A. was released starting August 10, 2022, followed by a second announced volume, Blade Runner: Black Lotus - Las Vegas, with its first issue released in September 2025.
