Gregg Araki was inspired to create a television series after being influenced by Twin Peaks, which he described as 'so ground-breaking and artistic and unusual and just its totally own thing'.

Araki had directed episodes of several other TV series but hesitated to run his own show until he conceived the idea of exploring life in Los Angeles, which he then developed into a script with writer Karley Sciortino.

Gregory Jacobs, who had previously collaborated with Araki on the series Red Oaks, joined the project and brought in Steven Soderbergh as an executive producer.

The production designer, costume designer, and director of photography on Now Apocalypse had all worked with Gregg Araki on his previous projects.

Starz canceled Now Apocalypse after just one season on July 26, 2019, prompting Araki to state he was shopping the series to other networks.
