Netflix ordered a first season of ten episodes in May 2018, with RuPaul cast in the starring role from the outset.

A casting breakdown released to talent agencies in July 2018 revealed details about four new characters: Louis, Hector/Damian Sanchez, Lady Danger, and Brianna.

The show features numerous cameos from former RuPaul's Drag Race contestants, including Mayhem Miller, Valentina, Eureka O'Hara, Bianca Del Rio, Alexis Mateo, Manila Luzon, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Jaymes Mansfield, Ongina, Kennedy Davenport, and several others, all appearing as unnamed queens.

Several Drag Race alumni also took on named guest roles, such as Jinkx Monsoon as Edie, Katya Zamolodchikova as Magda, Latrice Royale as Fabergé Legs, and Ginger Minj as Tommy/Fanny Pack.

A 16-track official television soundtrack album was released by Warner Bros. Entertainment on January 24, 2020, created by Lior Rosner and RuPaul.

Netflix cancelled the series after just one season, announcing the decision on March 6, 2020, less than two months after its premiere.

The series received mixed reviews, holding a 52% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 46 out of 100 on Metacritic.
