Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

Undercover is a Belgian-Dutch co-production crime series based on a story inspired by real events; agents infiltrate the activities of a drug baron in the Limburg region.

Origins

The series was developed as a co-production between Netflix and Eén, Belgium's public broadcasting institution, and was commissioned as a direct-to-series order.

References

In June 2019, Janus van Wesenbeeck, the real drug baron who inspired the character Ferry Bouman, turned himself in to Dutch police under the name 'Ferry Bouman' and said the police were looking for him.

Filming

The first season of the series was largely shot at the Blauwe Meer holiday park in Lommel, but this location is called 'Camping Zonnedauw' in the series; the actual place where the real events took place is the Parelstrand holiday park in the same city.

Filming

The second season was largely shot at Gipsy Horses Ranch in Westerlo, which is called 'Paardenranch El Dorado' in the series; the Berger family's villa is Serristenvilla Muyldermans in Hoeilaart.

Reception

According to Netflix's end-of-2023 viewing data, the first season was watched for a total of 11 million hours on the platform, which amounts to an average of over 1.3 million views per episode.

Reception

Undercover was the only Belgian series selected for the competition section of the 2018 Canneseries festival, won the audience award at the Seriencamp Festival in Munich in November 2018, and won the best series jury award at the Cinequest Film Festival in March 2019.

Trivia

Within the series' universe, a film called Ferry (2021) and subsequently an eight-episode series titled Ferry: The Series were made, followed by the film Ferry 2 in December 2024, all of which are prequels explaining the backstory of Undercover.
