The series is based on the novel of the same name by Kristin Hannah and was created for Netflix by Maggie Friedman.

Netflix gave the production a series order for a first season of ten episodes on February 22, 2019, with Maggie Friedman serving as showrunner and Stephanie Germain, Katherine Heigl, and Lee Rose as executive producers.

In October 2022, it was announced that the second season would be the show's final season, expanded to 16 episodes and split into two parts released months apart.

Katherine Heigl was cast in a lead role on July 10, 2019, followed by Ben Lawson, Sarah Chalke, and Beau Garrett in starring roles the following month.

Ali Skovbye and Roan Curtis were cast in September 2019 to portray the teenage versions of Katherine Heigl's and Sarah Chalke's characters, Tully and Kate.

Principal photography for the first season took place in Burnaby, British Columbia, running from September 17, 2019, to January 21, 2020.

Filming for the second season began on August 30, 2021, and wrapped on April 28, 2022, with Vincent De Paula serving as cinematographer throughout the series.

Netflix reported that Firefly Lane was viewed for a total of 1.3 billion minutes in its first week and ranked number one in the Nielsen ratings for two consecutive weeks in February 2021.

Netflix announced that 49 million people watched the series within its first 28 days of release.

The first season received mixed reviews, holding a 48% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics praised the chemistry between stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as the show's strongest asset; the second season saw a notably improved 83% approval rating.
