The series was originally titled 'Mexico City: Only Good Things Happen' when HBO first ordered a pilot episode on November 21, 2017.

The pilot episode was written by Fred Armisen, Ana Fabrega, and Julio Torres and directed by Fernando Frías, before HBO gave a full series order on July 2, 2018 under the new title 'Los Espookys'.

Lorne Michaels served as an executive producer on the show, alongside Fred Armisen and Andrew Singer, with Julio Torres and Alice Mathias as co-executive producers.

Filming for the second season wrapped in February 2022, though the season did not premiere until September 16, 2022, more than three years after the first season.

The series holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 30 reviews, with an average score of 8.90/10.

Los Espookys won a 2022 Peabody Award.

Despite critical acclaim, including a Metacritic score of 83 out of 100 indicating 'universal acclaim,' HBO canceled the series in December 2022 after only two seasons.

The show features several notable guest stars playing themselves or fictionalized versions, including Isabella Rossellini as herself and Yalitza Aparicio as a character called The Moon.
