The series is the third television drama adaptation of Yuu Watase's manga Absolute Boyfriend, following previous adaptations produced in Japan and Taiwan.

The show was previously titled Romantic Comedy King and was originally in talks to air on the cable channel OCN, but that plan was ultimately cancelled before it moved to SBS.

The lead roles of Um Da-da and Ma Wang-jun were first offered to actors Song Ji-hyo and Chun Jung-myung respectively, but both turned down the parts.

The first script reading took place on June 22, 2018, with filming beginning the following month in July 2018.

The drama was originally scheduled to run for 40 episodes but was cut short by four episodes due to low domestic ratings, while the international broadcast version retained the full 40-episode run.

In South Korea, the show's broadcast schedule was adjusted, including the suspension of the Monday-Tuesday drama timeslot, which caused the following drama Doctor Detective to move into the Wednesday-Thursday slot.
