Renton Thurston desires to leave his home behind and join the mercenary group known as Gekkostate, hoping to find some adventure. When a robot crashes through Renton's garage the meeting sparks the beginning of Renton's involvement with Gekkostate as he takes off alongside the young girl Eureka as the co-pilot of the Nirvash.

The series is filled with homages to other anime, films and techno music culture; series composer Dai Satō explained in an interview that the team's philosophy was 'the standard is important, let's do all the classics,' leading to many borrowed lines, scenes and even story structures.

Many character names reference real-world figures and fiction: Renton Thurston combines Mark Renton from 'Trainspotting' and Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, while Eureka's name comes from the 1992 EURECA satellite (spelled differently from the in-story rocket EUREKA).

Effects

The transformation sequences of the Nirvash type ZERO were designed by mecha designer Shoji Kawamori to follow the same transformation pattern as the robot Gunhead from his 1989 tokusatsu film of the same name.

Filming

The grandfather character Axel Thurston was originally planned to appear only in the early episodes, but voice actor Takeshi Aono's performance was well received enough that additional scenes were written to keep him appearing throughout the rest of the series.

Reception

Despite struggling TV ratings during its original broadcast, the series gained a devoted fanbase and won several awards at Japanese award shows, most notably at the 2006 Tokyo International Anime Fair.

Reception

The manga adaptation by Hitoshi Kataoka and Kazuma Kondo has sold over 1.5 million copies in total, and the same creative duo later included homages to Eureka Seven in their next work, Deadman Wonderland.

Music

In the United States and France, the band HALCALI became known largely because they performed the third ending theme 'TIP TAPS TIP,' which led to their CD debut in those territories.
