Flint: The Time Detective

The anime is based on a manga written by Hideki Sonoda that was first serialized in Famitsu Bros. Comics magazine starting in January 1998, with a tie-in manga adaptation also running in Comic Bom Bom illustrated by Akira Yamauchi.

The series marked the first regular television anime role for voice actress Nana Mizuki, who played Sora Yamato.

The villain trio of Petra Fina and her henchmen Dino and Mite is explicitly noted as being reminiscent of Marjo, Grocky, and Walther from the classic series Time Bokan.

The character Kyoichiro Narugami/Merlock Holmes, a vampire-descended Time Police detective, shares the surname Narugami with an earlier vampire detective character created by the same writer, Hideki Sonoda, in his previous work Jikuu Tantei DD: Maboroshi no Lorelei.

Merlock Holmes' English name is a deliberate pun on the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

The show was featured as a themed attraction called 'Dream Time Machine' at Sanrio Puroland from July 1998 to July 2000, with actress Megumi Okina serving as navigator and performing the theme song for the attraction.

Because the show's sponsor, Tanaka Foods, sold a tie-in furikake seasoning product called 'Genshi-kun furikake', the series was not broadcast in Hiroshima Prefecture, where the company's headquarters is located.

In the English dub, the character Super Ninja is mistakenly the only member of the Great Four to retain the word 'Super' in his transformed name, due to a naming error, and he also speaks in first person in the original Japanese version despite this being atypical for how Japanese characters usually refer to themselves in third person.
