The working title of the series during its planning stage was 'Yattā Dokan' before being finalized as Yatterman.

Yatterman was the second entry in the Time Bokan series and was the last series produced by Tatsunoko Productions founder Tatsuo Yoshida before his death.

Unlike other entries in the Time Bokan franchise, Yatterman does not involve time travel; instead episodes are homages or parodies of famous stories, fairy tales, historical figures and world wonders.

The character Doronjo is said to be modeled after French actress Mylène Demongeot, who starred as the heroine in the 1960s French Fantômas film series.

During the original broadcast, the Doronbo gang was presented as a continuation of the Marjo gang from the previous series Time Bokan, with the final episode of that show having the characters announce their name change to Doronjo, Boyacky and Tonzura.

The dog-riding pose where Yatterman stand on the side steps of Yatterwan to move was inspired by the image of firefighters riding a fire engine, an idea from chief director Hiroshi Sasagawa.
