The series is a joint Australian–New Zealand production, broadcast on Network 10 and TVNZ 1, reflecting its cross-national setting and production.

The show premiered on 17 July 2019 and quickly expanded internationally, streaming on Acorn TV in the US from 5 August 2019 and on Alibi in the UK from 24 September 2019.

Lucy Lawless plays former detective turned PI Alexa Crowe, who also has a side hustle baking bread in her kitchen for a local café.

From season 2 onward, the character Alexa Crowe relocates from Victoria to Auckland, mirroring the show's shift in filming location and supporting cast, including a new detective partner played by Rawiri Jobe.

Bernard Curry's character DI Kieran Hussey, a main character in season 1, is reduced to a guest role starting season 2, while Alex Andreas's café owner character George Stathopoulos was also written out after season 1.

Alexa Crowe's pet cat changes between seasons: Captain Thunderbolt appears in season 1, while a different cat named Chowder takes over from season 2 onward.

The series has been steadily renewed over the years, growing from a 10-episode format in its first three seasons to an eight-episode format for seasons 4 and 5, with AMC Networks announcing the later seasons.
