The series is an animated spin-off of the live-action sitcom Happy Days, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and Paramount Television for ABC's Saturday morning lineup, airing from November 8, 1980 to November 28, 1981.

Henry Winkler, Ron Howard, and Donny Most all reprised their roles as Fonzie, Richie Cunningham, and Ralph Malph respectively from the original live-action series.

Anson Williams, who played Potsie Webber on the live-action Happy Days, did not appear in the animated series.

Wolfman Jack provided the opening narration for the series, while Didi Conn voiced Cupcake, a clumsy space pilot from the 25th century, and Frank Welker voiced the anthropomorphic dog character Mr. Cool.

The show's premise involves the Happy Days gang traveling through different time periods while trying to return to their home time of 1957 Milwaukee, after a time machine piloted by a girl from the future malfunctions.

After the series ended, the characters Fonzie and Mr. Cool were carried over into the series Laverne & Shirley in the Army, which premiered October 10, 1981 and was later renamed Laverne & Shirley with Special Guest Star The Fonz, running until September 3, 1983.

The series was later packaged in syndication alongside an animated Mork & Mindy spin-off as part of the block Mork & Mindy/Laverne & Shirley/Fonz Hour.

The complete series was released on November 5, 2019 as a made-on-demand DVD-R by CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment.
