Muppets Now was first announced on August 23, 2019, as a short-form unscripted series, with director Kirk Thatcher stating in December 2019 that the show would combine three different types of shows.

Critic Lucy Mangan of The Guardian rated the series 4 out of 5 stars, calling it the best Muppets work since the original The Muppet Show.
