After several years of trying to bring Blue's Clues back to Nickelodeon, original creators Angela C. Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson were finally given permission in 2017 to develop a reboot for 20 episodes.

Over a thousand people participated in the auditions for the new host, as revealed in a video Nickelodeon posted about the casting process on April 17, 2018.

Josh Dela Cruz, announced as the new host on September 13, 2018, was previously best known as an understudy for Aladdin on Broadway for five years and is the only Asian-American to host Blue's Clues.

Steve Burns, the original series' first host, personally participated in the casting process for the new host.

Steve Burns was initially reluctant to continue his association with the show but was persuaded by fans on social media to write, direct, and appear in the revival's premiere episode alongside Donovan Patton, who reprised his role as Joe.

The series is filmed at 9 Story Media Group's studio in Toronto, co-produced with animators from Brown Bag Films.

The animators updated the classic show's props for a modern audience, giving the handy dandy notebook a double function as a smartphone and having emails arrive during mail time alongside traditional letters.

On July 17, 2025, host Josh Dela Cruz revealed on Instagram that Nickelodeon had abruptly canceled the series, with only four episodes of the planned 26-episode fifth season ever produced.
