The series was first announced for development by Syfy in 2015, with Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey producing, before undergoing several changes in network and creative team.

In 2016, writers Les Bohem, Grant Morrison, and Brian Taylor were attached to the project, but by February 2019 the show moved to USA Network with David Wiener replacing Bohem as writer and Owen Harris directing the pilot.

After being developed for USA Network, the series was ultimately shifted to NBCUniversal's new streaming service Peacock in September 2019, and it premiered as one of the launch titles on Peacock's debut day, July 15, 2020.

Alden Ehrenreich was cast as John the Savage and Harry Lloyd as Bernard Marx in April 2019, followed by Jessica Brown Findlay as Lenina Crowne in May 2019.

Demi Moore joined the cast in a recurring role as Linda, John's mother.

The Dungeness Estate in Kent, England served as the filming location for the 'Savage Lands', with the Old Lifeboat Station there used to depict John and Linda's house.
