The series takes place during the transitional period between the end of the Goryeo dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, and features two friends who became enemies due to a misunderstanding.

Several characters are inspired by real historical figures: Seo Hwi is inspired by Jeong Jong-seong, Nam Seon-ho by Nam Gyeong-su, and the character Tae-ryeong is inspired by Jo Yeong-mu, while Seo Geom is based on Jeong Mong-ju.
