The production of the anime television series was announced on October 19, 2019 during GA Fes, based on the light novel series by Jougi Shiraishi.

Author Jougi Shiraishi expressed only one single request during production: no panties or panty shots (panchira) should be shown.

Shiraishi justified his request by explaining that such depictions often have a sexualized effect and would restrict the audience, as he wanted the anime to be watchable by people of all ages.

Shiraishi explained in a further interview that his request to avoid panchira was received with amusement outside Japan.

The opening title "Literature" was performed by Reina Ueda, while ChouCho sang the ending song "Haiiro no Saga"; the series' music was composed by AstroNoteS, who released a standalone soundtrack album on January 27, 2021.

The first episode was received mostly positively by several reviewers at the online platform Anime News Network; Nicholas Dupree and James Beckett even gave it a perfect score.

In the German-speaking region, the series was initially not shown in simulcast because the provider Wakanim had secured too many licenses for that period and employed too few staff; it was not made available with German subtitles under the title "Elainas Reise" until February 2021.

The anime publisher Animoon announced on August 3, 2024 during AnimagiC that it had licensed the series for a German-language disc release.
