The show's concept originated from a discussion between Ubisoft and Rob McElhenney about producing a television show around video games; McElhenney was invited to Ubisoft Montreal and, though initially hesitant, was won over during a studio tour.

Ubisoft assisted in designing the in-game video game characters, world, and other art assets for the show, and helped the writers stay authentic to real video game development practices.

F. Murray Abraham exited the series in 2022 after being previously warned about an allegation of sexual misconduct on set; he was let go following a second allegation, and he publicly apologized for offensive jokes made toward former colleagues.

The special episode 'Quarantine' was written, shot, and edited remotely in just three weeks during the COVID-19 pandemic, using Apple products such as iPhones.

Season 2 production was suspended in November 2020 after COVID-19 cases among crew members; by March 2021 a total of 26 crew members had contracted the virus, making it reportedly 'the worst outbreak of any show in Los Angeles'.

Because of the COVID outbreak, F. Murray Abraham's character worked remotely for the first few episodes of season 2 and did not shoot in person until episode seven, with testing occurring up to five times a week and very few people allowed on camera during his scenes.

Production on season 4 was delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, eventually starting in March 2024 and wrapping on May 4, 2024.

Inspired by a short story mentioned in the episode 'Backstory!', an ebook and audiobook titled Tears of the Anaren was released in June 2021, narrated in-character by F. Murray Abraham and Rob McElhenney.
