Trivia & behind the scenes

/
Origins

The idea for the show was created by two advertisement students, Amir Shaheen and Kristian Andersen, who derived the concept from popular Nordic TV Christmas calendars rather than from Christmas films.

References

Instead of drawing inspiration from Christmas movies, the creators looked to other Norwegian series such as the teen drama Skam.

Origins

Home for Christmas was Netflix's first Norwegian original series, and it became the most streamed series on Netflix in Norway in 2019.

Filming

Most of the series was filmed in Oslo, while outdoor winter scenes were shot in the copper mining town of Røros.

Filming

Due to unexpectedly warm weather during filming, snow had to be transported from Røros Airport to create convincing winter scenes.

Filming

Filming of season two began in Røros in March 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with production resuming in July 2020.

Music

One of the first season's main songs, 'Years' by Astrid S, topped the Shazam song search chart shortly after the series premiered.

References

The series was remade in Italy as 'I Hate Christmas' (Odio il natale) in 2022, which got a second season in 2023, and also remade in South Africa as 'Yoh! Christmas' in 2023.
